The Australian College of Applied Psychology will be holding its 5th annual conference focusing on mental health. The conference theme: Mind over matter in mental health: Implications for professional training and professional practice provides scope to develop a conference program that reflects key ACAP values and activities applied to mental health. There is an urgent national priority to fund mental health adequately and to provide services that meet the needs of consumers and carers. Central to this priority, a National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Report Card is currently being developed by the newly formed National Mental Health Commission (NMHC).
I’ll be presenting a paper titled; Employment as a Mental Health Intervention and the implications for Mental Health Training and Disability Employment Services. I’ll be looking at the current training of mental health professionals who have little understanding of how the disability employment system works and conversely, disability employment consultants have limited training in mental health. This presents as a challenge to the training of future mental health professionals and the managers of disability employment services to ensure both the professional development of consultants and the integration of mental health professionals with a sound understanding of disability employment and employment as an effective mental health intervention takes place.
